In a scene that takes place in Lombardo’s hotel room near the end of the movie, it is implied that Detective Perez’s deference to Lombardo was caused by her attraction to him, feelings which Lombardo pretends to return. The detective pushes back against her colleagues and says she doesn’t even want to question Lombardo’s other students or neighbors because then he will be associated with claims of impropriety. The case goes to trial, and in a dramatic courtroom moment, the whole thing is revealed to be a revenge plot: Kelly wanted to get back at Lombardo for having an affair with her mother, and Suzie was angry he did not bail her out of jail when she was arrested for a drug charge.
